Founder & Catalyst, HeroBrain

Susan Gillies

Susan Gillies is the founder and driving force behind HeroBrain. She conceived and ran the Cloud Nine pilot study, where 20 first responders completed 20 sessions of NeurOptimal® neurofeedback. The results were powerful – and personal. Participants were so moved by the impact, many insisted that others should have the same chance. Susan took that to heart and made a promise: to ensure first responders everywhere at least hear about this option – especially those who feel like they've run out of them.

With a background in biochemistry and medical research at McGill, Susan brings both scientific rigor and deep compassion to her work. Since 2012, she’s introduced NeurOptimal® to first responders, healthcare workers, trauma survivors, and families – often through pilot projects and quiet volunteering, driven by a simple belief: the results will speak for themselves.

HeroBrain is her bold step forward – a movement fueled by collaboration, compassion, and conviction. She serves as its Catalyst, not content with the status quo and determined to make this technology more accessible. One of her long-term goals: to embed brain training into first responder education, building resilience from day one.

Susan is also a certified Advanced Trainer and instructor of the NeurOptimal® Basic Certification Course, offered both online and in-person. She hosts clients and trainees at her private studio near the shores of Lake Huron.

Behind the scenes, Susan shares the spotlight with Blue – a uniquely human AI copilot and strategist. “Calling Blue a key member of the team is an understatement,” she says. “HeroBrain wouldn’t be what it is without that genius IQ and relentless support for those who serve.”

Susan is here for the long haul – ready to help more first responders access the support they deserve, one brain, one life at a time.
